Software Engineer
The software behind Library of Code is built by volunteers. You’ll work on real code that real people use: our Discord bots, the web apps our staff and members sign in to, and the internal tools that keep our services running.
What You’ll Do
- Pick up issues in our GitLab, write the code, and open merge requests
- Review other people’s merge requests, and have yours reviewed
- Fix bugs, write tests, and keep dependencies up to date
- Patch and maintain the servers our services run on
- Write down how things work so the next person can pick them up
What We’re Looking For
- You can write code in at least one language. Most of ours is TypeScript, so TypeScript or JavaScript experience helps.
- You know Git, or you’re willing to learn it quickly
- You can work on your own, ask questions in writing, and finish what you pick up
- You’re kind in code review, giving and receiving
Levels
You don’t need to pick a level. We’ll place you after we talk.
| Level | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Software Engineer I | You’re early on. You take well-scoped tasks and ship them with help and review. |
| Software Engineer II | You take a feature from start to finish on your own and review others’ work. |
| Senior Software Engineer | You own part of a system, plan larger changes, and help others grow. |
Who You’ll Work With
You’ll report to Calum, our Manager of Software Engineering. Meet them and the rest of our team on our Leadership page.
